God at Work: Around You

God is at work in the world and He wants you to be a part of what He is doing. Therefore, it is important to find out where and with whom He is working.

Is it possible that He is working through the Person of the Holy Spirit in your community, work place, or home and you are not aware of it. You might ask, “How can that be and I am unaware of it?” It is possible. The Lord gives us an example in the Bible. Peter fell asleep in the house of a friend. He had a dream of a sheet being lowered from heaven and it contained all kinds of animals, clean and unclean according to the Jewish law. At the same time, men sent by Cornelius were coming to get Peter. God had already appeared to Cornelius through an angel. God was at work in the hearts of both and neither was aware of the other.

Let me share with you an example from my past. Several years ago I was pastor of a church in Joplin, MO. There was a young couple who started attending the church. I had visited with them in their home and learned they did not yet have a relationship with God through faith in Christ Jesus. They attended the church for several weeks. One Sunday, during the invitation, I had the pianist and organist play music without any singing. During that invitation, without coming forward, she and he received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Neither knew the other had made that commitment until they got home and shared it with each other. God was doing a work in the heart of both, without each other’s knowledge of it.

Is God working with someone in your community, work place, or your home? Are they experiencing a problem God is using to bring them to Himself? You never know with whom the Lord is working around you. A family in your community may be experiencing a problem of which you are unaware, and yet, God is at work in their home speaking to them through the situation. That is why it is important for you to be sensitive to those around you.

The work place is one of the best places to recognize where God is at work. You may have a co-worker in the plant or office to whom you say “Good morning” each work day and you work closely with them during the day. Then one day their “Good morning” may not sound like himself or herself and their mood through the day may not be as usual. Here is where, because of spiritual sensitivity, you may be used of the Lord to help.

God has tried at times to get your attention by revealing where He is at work . . . A tender and sensitive heart will be ready to respond to Him at the slightest prompting. God makes your heart tender and sensitive when you spend time reading his word, praying, and worshiping Him faithfully. Consistently obeying Him in these disciplines will open your “spiritual eyes” to see where He is at work. At the slightest prompting you will be ready to respond where He needs you.
