What did you do before coming to Simmons?

My family and I served as Christian missionaries to Scandinavia and Southeast Asia for many years. Since 2003 we have served as pastors in the Emporia community.

When and why did you become a Chaplain?

I had been praying for a number of years about how to “pastor” our community and not just a church. Some chaplains had been talking to me for years about looking into chaplaincy. In 2016, I was approached by MarketPlace Chaplains USA. They wanted to know if I would be interested in serving as a chaplain in the Emporia area. Since that time I’ve been caring for the employees of various businesses. This gives me the opportunity to get to know my community better while providing pastoral care.

Where did you go to school?

Part of my formative years were in a private Catholic school in Europe. I returned to the U.S. and finished high school in Madison, KS. After attending a year at Emporia State University, I enrolled in Rhema Bible College in Oklahoma to major in Pastoral Studies. Since that time continuing education has been a constant part of my life and I enjoy reading to learn.

Where have you lived?

Although I was born in Tennessee, and lived my early childhood in Virginia, I grew up in Finland. Later, I returned to the United States to finish high school in Kansas. Because I moved so much, I was twenty years old when I graduated from high school and entered college. Since college we have lived in Emporia, Finland again, in Los Angeles, in Malaysia and finally in Emporia again.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to read books about Christian spirituality and teaching. I also enjoy the outdoors and hiking is on the top of my list when traveling. Yardwork and gardening clears my mind and I love the challenge of remodeling my home which seems to be an unending task. I also cut firewood and like to kayak when the opportunity arises. I’m also a sucker for a good garaged sale or auction.
