What did you do before coming to Simmons?

I grew up on a farm for the first seven years of my life attending a one room school house. My family moved several times living in Emporia for a year, Beloit for six years, and Clay Center for four years.  I attended Miltonvale Wesleyan College for two years and then graduated from Emporia State University.  I also attend Emporia State University a second time later in life receiving a Masters in Counseling.  I’ve served many roles in my career including a social worker for Clay County in Kansas, a Counselor at the Army Education Center in Swinefurd, Germany (where my husband was stationed in the army), and as a crisis manager for the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas. I’ve been happily married for 49 years and was in the motel business from 1971 until 2016.  I’ve raised five sons and have 6 grandchildren and 4 extras.  I was told by my doctors that I could not have children.  So, I claimed Psalm 113.9, “He grants the barren woman a home, like a joyful mother of children”.  I went from no children to five in seven years!

When and why did you become a Chaplain?

At age 14, I heard Rev. Billy Graham and knew in my heart that I wanted to know Jesus. To the song “Just as I am”, I accepted Him into my life. I had a number of influences in my life that led me down this path.  My grandmother was a wonderful Godly woman who prayed for me and had a profound influence on my life. The Christian college I attended grounded me in the Bible and I zealously internalized the Word of God. I have always been active in the church leading many Bible Studies, Directed Bible School, led seven support groups for sexually abused women, and served on many committees. I was a Chaplain for a short time at Newman Hospital and feel God has called me to be a Chaplain.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to read and travel.  My husband and I visited thirteen countries while living in Germany, took an extensive trip to Spain, traveled to England four times, have been to Israel twice, have taken many cruises, plus many Mission trips to Mexico, Haiti, and Nicaragua.  We have driven through Canada to Alaska and all the way to the Arctic Circle.  I have traveled by bus to the eastern half of Canada.  We have made many trips inside the U.S. including Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

I enjoy my grandchildren, grand dogs, and love family get-togethers.  I also love spending time with my pets including a Japanese Chin named Daisy Mae and a Sheltie named Abby.
